Good ol' "naval jelly" will do a great job to remove the worst of the rust without harming the remaining chrome

Naval jelly and the super super super finest steel wool you can find.
Go here http://www.briwaxwoodcare.com/stelwool.htm
and scroll half way down. You'll see that 000 or 0000 grade will work on chrome.

Hey Shortness, another quick fix is rub it with a wad of aluminum foil. It won't scratch and it fills in the holes and pits and makes them disappear.

Im screwed on what I thought was rust. Turns out its a tarnishing reaction from the de-icer the state uses. Nothing I can do about whats there but at least Im all polished and have a start to some protection for this year.

If it's some of that same shit they use up here you just can't ride once they lay it down on the roads. That new shit gets into everything on the bike. I would only ride my Kawi after the first snow.

Spraying your chrome down with WD-40 over the winter months helps keep the pitting from growing.
